Discover my Journey to Balance

Shortly after enrolling in an accelerated nursing program while pursuing a master’s degree, my world underwent a dramatic shift due to an unexpected separation from my husband. Suddenly alone and managing our 6-year-old son without nearby family support, I faced overwhelming challenges with little time for sorrow.

As I assumed the roles of both mother and father, I learned to tackle life’s hurdles, develop skills on the fly, cultivate courage, and recognize the audacity it takes to ask for help and commit to personal growth.

Teaching my son bravery became a daily lesson for both of us.

After graduating from nursing school, I was hopeful for relief, expecting my constant anxiety and panic attacks to subside. However, my stress skyrocketed when I realized that none of the shifts worked for me—I had no one to watch my son. Desperate, I accepted an evening shift without a plan. Eventually, I gathered the courage to ask my neighbor if she could pick up my son from school and watch him until I returned after midnight. Every time I knocked on her door to retrieve my son, I felt miserable. Even though he was asleep, I would cry and apologize to him, promising that things would change.

When I couldn’t bear it any longer, I decided to speak with my boss. I was prepared to resign if I couldn’t switch to a day shift. Despite knowing it would be tough, I accepted an offer to work just two days a week on day shifts, with the condition that I maintain availability for five days a week.

This turned out to be the best decision. I learned something crucial: when you focus on what you truly want, the universe delivers.

Indeed, these trials tested my resilience. Not only did they unearth a strength within me that I had previously overlooked and bolstered my ability to stand up for my needs and wants, but they also highlighted the importance of balance and resilience in life, reshaping my path in unexpected ways.

Despite everything, my journey was not merely about survival but a commitment to thrive. My unwavering vow was to preserve my joy—a non-negotiable aspect of my identity that fuels my spirit.

I focused on embracing joy and self-care while striving to be the best mother I could be. Graduating from these challenges, I emerged with newfound resilience, becoming a beacon of joy and strength for those seeking a balanced life, well aware of the road they tread.

Professional Bio

Perrette St Preux is a certified empowerment coach for healthcare workers. Through writing and coaching, she promotes self-awareness, self-care, receptiveness, and resilience as crucial factors for fostering well-being in healthcare. She is the author of the book GIVE AND RECEIVE: How to Serve in Healthcare without Neglecting Yourself.

She has a doctorate in Medicine from abroad, a BS in nursing, a master’s degree in public health with a specialization in health systems and policy, and more than a decade of valuable experience across various healthcare systems.

She is the mother of a teenage boy and lives in Montreal, Canada.
